Informtaion for Parents.
Mazal Tov your baby has just had his bris. These notes are
for your guidance to help you care for him over the next few days. Your baby may understandably be more irritable over the next few hours - perhaps overnight. Just comfort and feed him regularly and perhaps a little more frequently.

Immeditate Aftercare
I have removed the dressing and checked that there is no bleeding . Please check the baby again in one hour. Even if it means waking him, preferably with someone holding his legs. This is to check there is no bleeding.
Please then let me know how he is either by phone or text.

Bleeding

It is normal for there to be some blood staining on the gauze square.

However, if there is any fresh  bleeding. (This is usually dark and sticky and will saturate the gauze square completely).
Then please call me immediately.

Healing
Following removal of the bandage the penis will look red and raw. This is entirely normal and will settle over the next few days taking seven to fourteen days to take on the appearance of a normal circumcised penis. There may well be some oozing from the raw area, which may even stain the nappy. This may be creamy or yellow coloured and should not be confused with pus. This discharge (exudate) is to be expected as it is part of the normal process of healing following this method of circumcision.
The overlying gauze swabs are placed over the exposed glans in order to protect it. They should be replaced whenever you change his nappy.

Before placing the gauze swabs please smear some Vaseline on it to prevent it sticking to the skin, continue with the gauze and Vaseline for two days. After that for the next two weeks please smear Vaseline over the tip of the glans and around the sides.
In the event of the gauze adhering to the glans pour some baby or olive oil on the gauze and that should loosen it.

Bathing
Please avoid bathing him for the next 12 hours, just top and tail, but please do give him a bath tomorrow.

On the 4th and 5th day after the bris, you may find a few drops of blood on the nappy. This is what is called post-operational oozing and is a discharge that appears on the human body after operations.

If at this time the penis is seen by someone who is not used to seeing babies having had a bris, they may express suprise at the appearance even suggesting that the wound is infected. You may reassure them that this is not the case. (I would be pleased to answer enquiries).

Please note that there has been no suturing (stitching). This is not an oversight and is the normal procedure in this type of bris milah. Healing will occur as already described.

It is likely that there may be swelling of the shaft below the glans either right round or asymmetrically. It may sometimes be quite marked, this may last several weeks. However it will resolve with time to give a normal appearance.

REMEMBER I am available for advice at any time.
